2 New Laser Hair Treatment Technologies & How They Work

by Judith Davidson

If you are considering obtaining laser hair treatment to remove unwanted hair on your body or face permanently, then you should learn about the various types of lasers used by hair removal experts today. While there are many laser types that have been in use for years or even decades, there are also several new lasers that can remove unwanted hair even more quickly while producing fewer side effects than more traditional laser types.

Read on to learn about two new laser hair treatment technologies and how they work.

1. Diode Laser

One newer type of laser used to remove unwanted body and facial hair is the diode laser. The diode laser is considered a light-based hair removal tool that works more effectively than the older form of light-based hair removal called intense pulsed light therapy (IPL).

IPL lasers emit many non-targeted light wavelengths that vary in length from 400 to 1200nm. This wide array of light wavelengths targets both the melanin in hair and skin when destroying unwanted hair. For this reason, this hair removal tool can produce less-than-optimal results and create unwanted side effects when used to remove hair from darker, melanin-rich skin types.

Diode lasers, on the other hand, release just two specific light wavelengths of light that each target a specific part of the hair follicle only.  An 810nm light wavelength targets only the melanin located in the hair shaft, while a 940nm light wavelength targets only the hemoglobin in the blood located at the hair follicle base.

These two targeted wavelengths of light typically reduce unwanted hair growth very quickly and effectively because all light the diode laser produces targets the hair follicle alone. In addition, diode lasers can be used safely and effectively on darker skin types.

2. Dual Wavelength Laser

Two traditional hair removal lasers include the Alexandrite laser that emits just one short wavelength of light and the Nd:YAG laser that removes unwanted hair with just one long light wavelength. Each laser has its unique advantages when used as a hair removal tool.

A new laser type that combines the benefits of both lasers is the dual-wavelength laser. This hair removal laser type emits a short, 755 nm wavelength of light that penetrates just into the surface of the skin and a longer, 1064 nm wavelength that penetrates deep into the skin's epidermis to target two parts of the hair follicle during each hair removal session instead of just one. When two parts of the hair follicle are targeted, unwanted hair can typically be removed much more quickly and effectively than when one area of the follicle alone is treated.

If you would like to obtain laser hair therapy to remove unwanted body hair for good, then understand that there are a variety of hair removal lasers in use today. These two modern hair removal laser types are good options when you want quick hair removal with few undesirable side effects.
